On September 15, 1965, the first episode of the television show, Lost in Space debuted on CBS.
Series creator Irwin Allen imagined a science fiction version of The Swiss Family Robinson. The year is 1997. The United States is gearing up for space colonization because of overcrowding on Earth. The space-faring Robinson family embarks on a journey to an Earth-like planet in the Alpha Centauri system in a cryogenic sleep chamber to be awakened upon arrival at their destination. As with many adventure TV shows from the 1960s, the trip to the family’s new home does not go without its share of problems. Lost in Space enjoyed a three-year run before cancellation. It was followed by a feature film in 1998 and a revival of the series in 2018.
