Rebuilding the Dream, Pt 162

We fell one approval short of getting our Temporary Certificate of Occupancy this week.

The compliance inspector was up on Tuesday for our final TCO inspection. We expected a checklist for permanent occupancy, but thought we were ready for the temporary. Apparently, we’ll need an ‘IRC Code Modification’ approval to use the sliding glass doors as our main entrances and exits.

The steps we built.

What we didn’t know in advance was that the county requires that the main ‘emergency ingress and egress’ into the house requires a hinge. In other words, to use the sliding glass doors as the ways into and out of our house, we need a special waiver. If we don’t get that waiver, we don’t get our certificate. And with more than a foot of snow on the ground on the mountain now, the chance of getting access to our ‘swing’ doors is slim and none. And Slim just left town. (Spoiler alert: both of the ‘swing’ doors are too far off the ground to build any kind of temporary access, especially this time of year.)

The ‘swing’ doors are a wee bit off the ground.

So, now we wait until the man with the authority to approve our request gets back from vacation. That’s supposed to be tomorrow. But with the storm that just rolled through the area, it won’t surprise me if other requests take priority.

We learned we are close enough to getting that CO that we can begin moving boxes and such into the house. As long as we aren’t living there, we can get stuff moved out of our various storage units. Of course, now we get to deal with moving in the snow. Happy, happy, joy, joy, yay us. 🙄

Even when we finally get moved in, we’ll still have a lot left to do. Besides getting moved in, that is. We have a few minor issues to take care of besides getting the decks built before we can get our permanent certificate. After we clear this last hurdle, we will finally live in our new abode.
